How to Get Published with a Tweet: Twitter Pitch Events in 2021

Twitter pitch events are designed for writers to get their work in front of literary agents and editors. During these events, which are run by various organizations and individuals, writers pitch their book in 280 characters or less. Agents and editors are invited to heart these pitches as an invitation for the writer to send them a query.

If you plan on participating in one of these events, it’s crucial to nail your pitch, because agents will be reading through a TON of them. Yours has to stand out!

A few tips: Be concise and specific. Get across WHO the story is about, WHERE it’s taking place, and WHAT is driving the main character. Use proper sentence structure. If you use comparative titles, make sure they are accurate (here’s a post I wrote all about comp titles). Make sure the character or narrative voice shines through.

Below are a few pitches I liked during last year’s final #PitMad and why I clicked that coveted heart symbol. Scroll through for Twitter Pitch events you can participate in during 2021!

1. Pitch by @KrakenOfDoom

The lack of periods in this pitch does irk my editor’s brain but, otherwise, I like the mystery. We know exactly who the main character is—Glory—and we know a little bit about her—that she’s a witch and she’s autistic—and the stakes are clear.

2. Pitch by @bookgirl_kt

Short and simple, but everything to peak my interest is here. I’m especially drawn to the God of Cowardice character, because they sound hilarious, and disability representation is always a plus.

3. Pitch by @bobbycblaine

This is an example of comp titles done well. I’m SO intrigued by the combination of The Queen’s Gambit and The Hunger Games. And warring chess pieces from death? Yes, please.

4. Pitch by @SimeonCare

This writer sets up their pitch to be another mundane list, but then surprises me with a clever punchline. The key thing here is narrative voice. I expect this story to be fun and witty, with tongue-in-cheek humour.

5. Pitch by @shiwritesprose

This concept is strong—a zombie testifying against her killer is not something I’ve read before—and it’s written succinctly.
