National Novel Writing Month is an annual challenge to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That’s 1667 words a day, every day, for the month of November. Sounds crazy? That’s because it is!
While NaNoWriMo isn’t for everyone (and that’s totally fine!) it can be a ton of fun, and a great way to jump-start a daily writing habit. To support those in our community who are embarking on the challenge this year, we are delighted to present two resources to help you write your novel: Mythos & Ink’s NaNoWriMo Support Group (a.k.a. MyNaNoWriMo 2020) and a fillable Novel Planner Spreadsheet to keep you organized as you write!
What is MyNaNoWriMo?
MyNaNoWriMo 2020 takes place on Mythos & Ink’s Discord community, a place for people who love science fiction and fantasy to unite! (Discord is a voice, text, and video chat service with over a quarter of a billion users. It’s popular with gamers, but any online community can take advantage of the application’s features. It’s also free!) And we’ve got some awesome things planned for our NaNoWriMo channel, including the following:
1. Goal Declarations.
Traditional NaNo dictates that you start November with a blank page (outlining is accepted, but no actual prose), but a modified NaNo is just as encouraged! Maybe you’re working on re-writing a second draft, or want to finish up a book you’ve already started. Maybe you want to write poems or short stories instead of a novel. Maybe you want to give yourself a smaller word count goal. Any of these can be incorporated into NaNo. All you need to do is figure out what writing goal YOU want to achieve during November, then declare it in the channel!
2. Regularly Scheduled Writing Sessions.
Staff “office hours” are happening throughout November, during which we are hosting regular writing sprints. While these aren’t the only times that we’ll be online, they are the slots that are guaranteed to always have a Mythos & Ink staff member around.
3. Community Support.
Post your word-counts, your celebrations, your rants, your writer’s block, and your breakthroughs. Let’s get through this together!
Anyone who is part of our channel and wins NaNo (a.k.a. completes the goal they declared at the beginning of the month) gets a free ebook of their choice from our catalogue!
5. And More!
Stay tuned post-November for revision and editing support to make those words you wrote even better!

What is this Novel Planner Spreadsheet you speak of?
Our editor made an awesome document to help you plan your novel! It includes:
- A sheet that explains story beats and where they go.
- A simplified beat sheet, specifically designed for pantsers.
- A character tracker to ensure your cast is diverse.
- An Enneagram chart, including fictional examples, to help brainstorm character traits.
Here are some screenshots of the spreadsheet to show you how comprehensive it is:
